As one of Vinitaly’s sponsors, Gilbert & Gaillard presented a range of Blancs de Blancs Champagnes at a conference and tasting hosted by François Gilbert. One of the major must-attend fixtures on the global wine calendar, Vinitaly showcases the Italian wine industry and this year welcomed over 4,000 exhibitors and 150,000 visitors from 140 countries. The 49th show took place from March 22 to 25 in Verona. Italy is the sixth-largest market for Champagne, selling 7,500,000 bottles in 2013.
Exuding finesse, minerality and minimalism, Champagne never ceases to amaze, from its production process through to marketing. François Gilbert outlined the region – its history, terroirs, aromas and grape varieties – and took a comprehensive view of the history of this highly-acclaimed sparkling wine. The Côte des Blancs covers a broad aromatic spectrum, including Cramant (finesse and freshness, aromas of white flowers and fresh almonds), Avize (balance, finesse and aromas of white flowers, hazelnut and brioche), and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger (power and structure with aromas of chalk, brioche and white-fleshed fruits).
The 8 Blancs de Blancs cuvees produced by 8 Champagne houses showed amazing diversity:
Champagne Pierre Gimonnet & Fils: Extra-brut non dosé « Œnophile » 2008.
Champagne Gosset: Grand Blanc de Blancs.
Champagne Philippe Gonet: Roy Soleil Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru.
Champagne Duval Leroy: Blanc de Blancs 2006 Grand Cru.
